A VISIT TO KEW GARDENS part one

Wednesday we visited Kew Gardens in Richmond. The weather was overcast and cool but we had a wonderful day looking around these magnificent gardens and glasshouses.

We did not realise that inside Kew is Kew Palace a wonderful building where George 3rd was schooled as was George 4th and it was also used by the family as a country retreat and when King George 3rd was ill, this was where the family moved to be close to his doctors and sheltered from the public eye.

The guides are dressed for the Georgian period and we had a very interesting talk with a young man dressed in frock coat and britches all about King George and Queen Charlotte, one of the things he told us was that Queen Charlotte actually died in the house as she was taken ill while traveling past and landed up stopping in expecting to be able to carry on with her journey in a few days but stayed for  a few months until her death.

I have always loved the Georgian period so this was such a treat to discover this Palace and be able to visit.

I took a couple of photo's of this doll house that was in a room on the ground floor.

  1. Wonderful visit! More please. I've not actually been there but have wandered through Kew's glasshouses many years ago when living in Queensbury, Edgeware.
(PS. I'm presuming that 'WE' are on a weeks holiday then!?!?)
